According to cdnow.com, this is the 2nd
album by Sonny Spoon out of Atlanta, GA. I knew nothing about this guy when i got the cd,
so i listened to the whole thing without bias. This new album "Hustler" shows
alot of promise and will not disapoint you, however is lacks the necessary amount of
really good tracks to make it a great album. Now i asked my boy in Atlanta if he knew
anything about Sonny Spoon, and he told me Sonny Spoon was a gospel rapper who had a
Sunday morning gospel show on 97.5 radio in Atlanta. There are a few tracks on the album
which talk about religion and praying and shit but no more than any other artist would put
slow, mellow, often last song tracks which deal with those subjects. Anyways this album is
very original, has some great production and i must say Sonny Spoon's style is far better
than most other ATLiens I have heard up to now.
The intro to the album is short but sweet, and has a nice little jazzy piano solo on it.
The first track on the album is called "Guiding Light", but it aint no praying
session. The song is alright for the most part. Most of the songs which talk about
religion are basically just the typical positive songs, like tellin people to keep their
life on course and not fuck around with drugs, crime and in this case "the voices in
your head" as Sonny Spoon puts it. Track 3 "Tear It Down" has a real
Atlanta feel, some rappers are featured but not listed. Another decent track over all.
Track 4 is the first real good track on the album, "No Nonsense". This one has a
real nice, original beat and it really works with Spoon's style. The bassline especially
caught my attention real quick when it started making things fall of the shelves in my
room. This song is real tight, yall need to peep it. Track 5 , "Fire" reminds me
of some Pastor Troy type shit cause everyone in the song sounds all aggravated and is
rappin in that style. That shit dont work for me personally but i know it does for alot of
yall, so check that one out too. Track 6 is also good, called "How Things Spose to
Be" and this one is kind of a laid back, relaxed feel to it. The next few tracks,
"Friend In Need", "Ball, Ball Ball" and "Loving The Streets"
need to be skipped since they are nothing but effortless filler tracks (the amount of
these is one of the main problems with the album). Track 10 however, the title track
"Hustler" is a great track. They took the Bon Jovi song "Wanted Dead Or
Alive" and really made a track out of it, they use the entire hook, guitars, chorus
and all (lyrics changed of course). "Hustler" is one of those tracks which is so
good and so original you wish the rest of the album was made in its image, but
unfortunatly that wasnt the case here. Yall need to check out this track for sure because
its just too damn tight to explain. The album doesnt die off right after that song either,
track 12 "Live Or Die" is another great track. Its some gangsta type shit with a
hard beat and some real nice flows and is also worth listening to.
If i gave you the impression in the first part of this review that Sonny Spoon was up on
some religious shit, it aint right. This is a good, original album and deserves to be
taken seriously. The tracks which deal with religious subjects are just the positive
tracks on the album, and while not always good tracks should not be held against the
artist. I reccomend yall pick up this album cause its one of the best, if not the best
Atlanta album to drop this year (but yall know im not a huge fan of ATL in the first
place:) pick it up new |
