 A lawsuit has been filed alleging negligence on the part of rapper Plies, the record label Slip-N-Slide Records and a downtown Gainesville nightclub where five concert-goers were injured in a 2006 shooting. Continue reading for more details.
The lawsuit names Plies, whose real name is Algernod Lanier Washington, the record label, the 238 West nightclub, and others affiliated with the July 2006 concert or the club as defendants.
Shortly before the club was set to close on July 2, 2006, Gainesville Police reported members of the rapper's entourage pulled out guns and fired. Five people were injured during the incident involving a sold-out crowd of about 1,000 people who had gathered to see Plies and another performer.
Police arrested four people including the rapper.
The musician later pled no contest to a misdemeanor charge of possession of a concealed weapon, said his attorney Robert Rush.
Police had not accused the rapper of firing a gun but of illegal possession of a concealed weapon.
Chestnut said the case, filed on the behalf of five Gainesville residents injured at the concert, is seeking $10 million in damages.
Rush said he had not seen the lawsuit. But, he said, “If they're suing Mr. Washington, they're suing the wrong person. He does not have legal liability. It is not an entertainer's job to provide security for a club where the entertainer is performing.”
