What my group members and I believe is that the current jury duty system should be changed so it is not mandatory for citizens to serve and can still be recognized as a responsible citizen. In a recent New York Times article it showed that more than 80% of citizens that received a summons for jury duty in NY did not appear on the scheduled date of their appearance. Now it may just be me but 80% seems a little much when we are talking about having a strong, just, dependable, and diverse jury system. And in order to do this we must have strong, just, dependable, and diverse citizens serving on trial to achieve this. Why not have the every day plumber or veterinarian on a jury but we should not force them. So I hope you will pass our bill to make jury duty not mandatory for U.S. citizens.
