Project Pat’s back on the scene with a brand new album, Walkin’ Bank Roll to follow up last year’s Crook By the Book. With a hit single and a hit TV show under his belt, Pat is bigger than ever. He checks in with Down-South while promoting in the dirty…
Down-South.com: Can you introduce yourself?
Project Pat: Yeah it’s ya boy Project Pat-a. What’s goin on? Walkin bank roll.
You can rubber band me.
Down-South.com: And give me an idea what Project Pat’s been up to lately..
Project Pat: Okay what I been havin goin on lately is been on this tour,
promotin this album, Walkin Bank Roll. Hit single, “Don’t Call Me No Mo’, Don’t
Text Me No More”: #1 song, ringtone in the country. And just out here promotin.
Down-South.com: And where you at right now?
Project Pat: We in Montgomery, Alabama. On to Columbus, Georgia, ATL.
Down-South.com: It hasn’t been long since your last album. You had an album out
less than a year ago. Any reason for the quick turnaround?
Project Pat: Uhh, no.
Down-South.com: Just stay steady recording?
Project Pat: Just steady recordin.
Down-South.com: It seems like your last album maybe wasn’t promoted real well.
Do you ever feel like certain albums kinda fall off the map through no fault of
your own?
Project Pat: Uh well, I guess accordin to how people embrace ‘em. Some people
embrace some albums instead of others.
Down-South.com: Now I know you all got the show, Adventures in Hollyhood. Have
you been stayin mostly out in Cali?
Project Pat: Well I been in California, and just cross the country on shows. You
know. Just getting it. Stayin blessed.
Down-South.com: So have you been recordin out West?
Project Pat: Paul and Juicy stay out there. That’s where the studio at. Yeah we
don’t record in Memphis no more, we record in Cali.
Down-South.com: Does that feel different, recording in Cali versus recordin in
Memphis?
Project Pat: Naw that’s fine, cuz Paul and Juicy got the setup at they house.
Down-South.com: And you went platinum with the Mista Don’t Play album back in
2001, is that right?
Project Pat: Yeah I went platinum in six months.
Down-South.com: How do you think the industry’s different since you went
platinum in 2001 to now?
Project Pat: It was easier. Cuz ringtones got the game now. And people can
download music. So, you know. I mean it’s all good though. Still goin platinum
behind it. Three 6 went platinum around they last album. It’s still good.
Down-South.com: Ringtones are big now, and people are kinda more focused on
singles as opposed to albums. How do you balance that?
Project Pat: Man I mean I just roll with the punches, man. However they wanna
play it.
Down-South.com: Obviously Hypnotize Camp has blown up hugely in the last couple
years. How have things changed for the camp in general since Paul and Juicy won
the Oscar?
Project Pat: Oh, it’s still mainly the same man. We just makin good music. Tryin
to stay blessed.
Down-South.com: You had a jail stint right after your platinum success, so just
tell me what that did for your motivation or anything like that, since you been
outta jail?
Project Pat: Well basically, man, it just motivated me, man. Just to get, you
know, what been stolen from me. And just to stay focused, and you know, stay
motivated.
Down-South.com: You’re known for havin dark raps, while the TV show’s more like
a comedy show. Do you ever worry people might not take you as serious?
Project Pat: You know, it’s really just everyday life, and it is funny, cuz it
is everyday life. And we just do it, know what I’m sayin? It’s nothing to it, We
just do it.
Down-South.com: Is there gonna be a posse song on this album?
Project Pat: Nah, no posse song.
Down-South.com: I noticed you guys stopped doin posse songs on your last album.
Any reason for that?
Project Pat: No reason really. Just different.
Down-South.com: What’s up with the TV show? Is there another season comin up?
Project Pat: We makin our movie. We makin a movie.
Down-South.com: And what’s the movie?
Project Pat: Hustlin’ in Hollyhood, the movie.
Down-South.com: You’ve been in the game a while, and done the major label thing,
along with the independent thing. You prefer one or the other?
Project Pat: We still independent baby. Everything’s straight. We still good.
Money’s even better.
Down-South.com: Comin up in Memphis, did you guys ever dream you’d be where you
are now?
Project Pat: No. No we never did, but God just blessed us, and we here now. We
never dreamed it, that it’d go that far. But it did.
Down-South.com: “Don’t Call Me No Mo” kinda got that “Chickenhead” vibe of
trading verses between a guy and a girl. Were you tryin to recapture that feel?
Project Pat: No, we just givin a man’s point of view, a woman’s point of view on
the hook.
Down-South.com: Your brother and DJ Paul have always run the label and you’ve
played the solo artist route. Do you ever have any desire to get more involved
in the business side of things?
Project Pat: No, no, no. No desire.
Down-South.com: Business isn’t your thing?
Project Pat: Naw, that’s not my thing.
Down-South.com: Any comment on the state of the game today?
Project Pat: The game’s perfect. The game’s perfect. Walkin Bank Roll in stores,
October 30th.
Down-South.com: You seem to have kind of an optimistic view of things in the
industry. I guess you’re just havin fun?
Project Pat: Yeah, you know man. It’s just a job. Just hustling. Get the money
part of it. I’m dealin with the money and everything. It’s that personal stuff
that people be talking about and all that. I ain’t with all that. I care less
about all that.
