Foxx is responsible for one of the biggest hits of year, "Wipe Me Down" Down-South.com caught up with him and discussed his hit single, his upcoming album "Street Gossip" and much more. Check out now and lookout for his album which is dropping October 2nd.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
How did you get the name Foxx?
FOXX:
Aw, man that started way way way back when I was little. That came from the hood
man, everybody in the hood had an animal name. I ended up wih Foxx, you know
what I’m sayin’? So I ran with it. I think I was little, that was like the 6th
grade when I got that name.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
You came out of no where, and had arguable the biggest single of the year. Tell
me about life before you came up with “Wipe Me Down”?
FOXX:
Maaaaan! Workin’ my ass off man, workin’ my ass off. I had a little one; you
know what I’m sayin’? I had to support the little one, So I had to do what I had
to do. I was workin’ dead end jobs mane, I was delivering pizza at Domino’s. I’m
at the bottom of the barrel. You know what I’m sayin’? I was doin’ this rap
thing for fun, I wasn’t focusin’ on no rap. You know what I’m sayin’? I was
tryin’ to take care of little one, and it’s like a deal (record deal) fell in my
lap. It was a blessin’ you know what I’m sayin’? And Fed Ex told me I ain’t have
to work no more, cause I’m lazy too.(laughs) You know what I’m sayin’?
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
How did you come up with the song “Wipe Me Down”?
FOXX:
Man, really Mouse (Trill ENT. Producer;Produced “Wipe Me Down” and Boosie’s
“ZOOM”) gave me the beat and went from there. I was just workin’ on the album
you know what I’m sayin’? Cause I just make different songs, I make songs for
everything . On my album I got songs about the women. I got songs about the
cars. I got songs about the thugs, scrugs, songs for the scrippers, and whoever
else. That was just a song about shinin’ right there. You know what I’m sayin’?
They just had picked it as a single.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
When you did “Wipe Me Down” did you think would be as big as it was?
FOXX:
Not exactly when I did it because I ain’t know if it was gone make the album or
what. I ain’t pick the single you know what I’m sayin’? Really I didn’t want it
to be a single. My CEOs picked it, but soon as it hit I knew it was gone do
somethin’ cause it was like an instant banger. You know how some songs got to
grow on you? You gotta hear ‘em alotta times before you accept it? But that one
there, once it hit the club speakers it was on! You know what I’m sayin’? They
was bookin’ me, they was bookin’ me.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
Yeah, “Wipe Me Down” is a hard record. You’re signed to Trill Ent. how did you
get down with them?
FOXX:
Like I said, that was back when I was workin’. You know? I was rappin’ with this
lil’label just doin’ it for the fun of it. You know? And they end up puttin’ a
lil’ disc together for me, and passin’ out the snippets. And Mouse got a hold of
it and you know he wanted to work with me. He took it to the CEO & the CEO
called me and you know it went from there. Like I said, a deal fell in my lap. I
ain’t never think I’d be a rapper, it wasn’t one of my dreams you know what I’m
sayin’?
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
How has being around Boosie, Webbie, and the rest of the Trill Ent. family
helped mold you as an artist?
FOXX:
(Laughs) Really it did help, it will make you step your game up. You know? You
know what you goin’ against---You know what I’m sayin’? They got years over me I
got this; I gotta do what I gotta do. I can’t let nobody outshine me on a track
or whatever, and I can’t be that other dude in the back. You know what I’m sayin’?
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
You said that you’re the TRILL ENT. UNDERDOG & that people think you’re a
one-hit wonder, how do you handle the pressure you’re faced with?
FOXX:
(sighs) Show and prove mane. Show and prove. I feel like anybody who come out
with a song, or anybody who come out with a hot single they gone say that: You
know that’s all he got he got lucky with that little single there. And that
ain’t nothin’ you know what I’m sayin’, so it’s show & prove. I feel like I’m
the underdog cause it ain’t just “Wipe Me Down” I got some heat. You know I’m
sayin’? Anybody can vouch any track I done got on with Boosie, Webbie, or
whoever I done held it down. You know what I’m sayin’?
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
On your mixtape you rap about losing your sister, what type of effect has that
had on you?
FOXX:
Man that was really, that was the main reason why I wasn’t really concerned with
no rap. Cause After that happened I use to do it for fun, but at one point I had
just stopped--- stopped doin’ it for fun. Cause when I was rappin’ with my
partners only person really use to hear my music was my sister. She use to tell
me that she liked it and that I need to keep doin’ it and all that dere. That’s
really what made me go do it. Just so I could go hurry and record a song and
just let her hear it and see what she gone say about it. But when she died that
messed me up a whole lot. Cause like I said---When my partners made the snippet
disc, when Mouse got it, I wasn’t even rappin’ no mo’.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
On your “Grew Up A Screw Up” freestyle you tell some of your story. I can tell
you came a long way, how did you keep the faith in your music career? But now
you tellin’ me that wasn’t a dream of yours…
FOXX:
Nah man, it wasn’t a dream of mine. And I ain’t the only one man. A deal can
fall in yo’ lap mane.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
The album is called “Street Gossip”, what made you pick that title?
FOXX:
Cause that’s really all the streets do is gossip. That’s all the streets do is
gossip. That’s all the streets do is talk, and talk what they don’t know. You
know what I’m sayin’? I’m pretty sure it’s somebody that ain’t never met me,
never seen me in they life, and can sit down and tell you my whole life story.
Just sit there and make up some shit you know what I’m sayin’? (laughs) And
that’s why I called it “Street Gossip” cause I know when I drop it’s gone be
alotta talk! Plus, I’m talkin’ bout everything, like I say I got music for
everybody---the old people, the young people, all that. You know what I’m sayin’?
All dat.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
Who did you work with on the album? What producers?
FOXX:
Mostly it was in house. I got B-REAL,MOUSE,BJ, and I worked with this cat outta
Monroe named Rodney that I’m workin’ with. He made the track probably for my
next single featuring Trey Songz he wrote the hook & produced the track for me.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
What other artists did you work with on the album?
FOXX:
I got Trey Songz, Paul Wall, T-Pain, Webbie, Big Head, and Fats
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
What date is your album coming out?
FOXX:
October 2nd. That’s soon! So right now it’s promo to death—grindin’!
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
Sales for new artists, no matter how good, are down---why do you think that is?
FOXX:
I have to say it’s bootleggin’ man, bootleggin’ is just ridiculous bruh. They
thought bootleggin’ had cooled down but it really didn’t actually it had gotten
worse. Me personally, I blame the rappers for the albums that they have. If you
make an album with only 1 or 2 songs that they like they just assume that
everybody album is like that. So they go out & buy a mixtape with yo single on
it & don’t even worry about buyin’ the album . That’s the way I look at it.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
Mixtapes are important to a new artist career I found it odd that you said on
your new mixtape (“Get Wit It Or Get Lost”) you didn’t want to do a mixtape. Why
not?
FOXX:
Nah man. I don’t really like mixtape bruh, cause really that don’t show no
talent. I can get on somebody else beat & rap different words to they rhythm all
day. I believe my lil’boy could sit down & do that if he put his mind to it. So
that don’t really prove nothin’ to me. I don’t think nobody ever got no record
deal off no mixtape.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
You come from Louisiana, where murder & drugs are common, your music reflects
that. How do you balance reality with your responsibilities as a role model?
FOXX:
Oh man. Really I saw a lot of that. You know what I’m sayin’? I wasn’t involved
with it or nothin’ like that you know what I’m sayin’? I grew up in a nice lil’
household you know what I’m sayin’? Everbody do a lil’dirt or somethin’. You
know what I’m sayin’? I ain’t gone lie I rap about it a lil’bit just cause it
sound good. But I don’t promote it you know what I’m sayin’?
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
You rep Baton Rouge, why is the music from Baton Rouge, different from that of
New Orleans & the West Bank?
FOXX:
It’s a BIG DIFFERENCE. To me New Orleans is basically bounce music, I ain’t
sayin’ every New Orleans rapper is a bounce rapper, but when you think of New
Orleans the first thing that come to your head is---bounce. It’s a big
difference; they got New Orleans accents & everything.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
You think it’s somethin’ in the environment why the music is different?
FOXX:
It’s a big big difference between New Orelans & Baton Rouge. You can put a
person from Baton Rouge next to a person from New Orleans and tell the
difference. It’s a big difference.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
There is a theory that Hurricane Katrina was planned by the gov’t…having seen
the effects of it firsthand, how does that make you feel?
FOXX:
Um, that planned by the government stuff I can’t even believe that. Like I say,
we ain’t get nothin’ but a wind damage you know what I’m sayin’? New Orleans got
flooded, but we 45 mins away from New Orleans. So all we got is a lil’ trees
blew…
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
Oh okay, so you didn’t know anyone in New Orleans who was affected by it
(Hurricane Katrina)?
FOXX:
Um yeah, I got mad family in New Orleans. Everybody done made it out safely or
whatever, done relocated or whatever. But my personal opinion I don’t think it
was planned man, that don’t even make no sense.
DOWN-SOUTH.COM:
But that’s it for the interview, anything else you want to say? Any last words?
FOXX:
October 2nd “Street Gossip” in stores! “Savage Life 2” coming after me.
